Costume Design for Geophonic. Gobbledegook Theatre 2021
Geophonic
Sept 2021 - Inside Out Dorset

Geophonic created by Gobbledegook Theatre is a site-responsive performance piece and sound walk, encouraging audiences to listen to the geological processes of the Earth. Geophonic is intended as a promenade, conceived for urban/city and coastal/rural environments, near to a body of water.
We’re interested in the narrative and consciousness of rock, how plastic is deeply connected to geology, paganism and human scale. It is a work hugely bound up in notions of custodianship of the natural world.
The costume design was designed with sustainability at its heart. Up-cycled retro ski suits are used to create striking geometric shapes. The digital prints and fabric design represent microscopic formations of rock particles and chemical formulas all created in bright colours and bold line to compliment the graphic style of the ski-suits.

Mesozoic!
Mesozoic! explores the artistic interpretation of the 95 miles of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Working in partnership with Gobbledegook Theatre we created a collection of work to support the Natural History’s Museums ‘Dippy on Tour’ which sees the Carnegie cast of the Diplodocus touring to various locations about England. Dorchester Museum was the first location of this tour. Working closely with scientists from the Jurassic Coast Trust the design work fused creative interpretation with factual information to create an outcome that was visually stunning and scientifically stimulating for the audience.
In Autumn 2017 the work was presented at the Royal Geographical Society International Conference (Visualising the Anthropocene). The main component of the design work was the Sedimentary Skirt, a learning-embedded costume which represents the Mesozoic interval of time. By interpreting the site through costume enabled the performer to not only perform in the location it was inspired by, but more importantly, take the landscape. We also explored broader issues of deep time to encourage our audience to think about the world we live in and to be naturally curious about what the landscape around us says about the history of the land. The body of work created also included textile design and the Duria Antiquior shirt.

Designed in collaboration with Gobbledegook Theatre. Exhibited in Dorset County Museum, Dorchester.
Naturally Curious
A three pieces entitled A Triptych on the Fossils of the Jurassic Coast (comprising the Phanaerozoic Blueprint, Longcase Geological Clock and the Toy Anthropocene) were in the Naturally Curious exhibition at Dorset County Museum, in the gallery alongside Dippy during the residence from February 9th to the May 7th 2018 which saw 150,000 visitors.

The Soaring Sky
The Soaring Sky makes audible an invisible landscape between singers and sky with a choral corridor of live voices inspired by the song of local and migratory birds. Devised and created by Arboanuts for the Inside Out Dorset festival in 2016. Arboanuts set an open design brief for a collection of students from the Arts University Bournemouth coordinated by Adele Keeley.

Ear Trumpet
Ear Trumpet is a piece about listening. Created and devised by Gobbledegook Theatre and designed by Adele Keeley of Site33, this outdoor performance encourages audience to listen to sounds that are erupting from beneath the ground. The premise sees a team of ‘Sonic Investigations’ the (National Institute for Sonic Geology) set up a field camp where a series of ‘sonic’ phenomena have been reported. Audiences listen in on the history of landscape, using a collection of recycled trumpets, trombones and gramophone horns.
Ordinally a site-specific piece for the Inside Out Dorset Festival 2014 , Ear Trumpet was commissioned by Without Walls for national and international touring and has currently been to numerous sites around the U.K., Europe and Seoul Street Arts Festival.
The set and costume designs features the use of maps indicating national and international locations of sonic eruptions, experiments and geological explanations. Eccentric costume design reflecting the golden age of early Earth Sciences. Pseudo-science tools such as soil samples, reference books, divining rods and measuring tools. Plus a coherent and believable identity for NISG, such as pin badges, letterheads and signage.
